The wind direction, Speed, and XW info on my AF5600 tends to vary a lot and at times will go blank - ie showing only the dashes. Is this a normal condition or does this indicate a problem?

dick,
when the wind is a direct cross wind this happens. apparently it has to do with the mathematical calculation that is used resulting in an errol .

Another reason this can happen is if your IAS is not well calibrated. Static position error can cause erroeneous airspeed readings and result in erroneous wind speed and direction indications. You may need to get your hands on the spreadsheet that allows you to do calibrated runs in 3 directions and see how much error you have in your IAS.
