Am I correct in understanding the only way to charge the internal battery on a 3500 is when the EFIS is on and drawing power from the aircraft battery?

Yes, you are correct

I'm concerned, because the battery does not appear to be charging. Is it easy to replace?
Yes, its pretty easy. On the backside of the instrument there are 6 screws holding the battery cover plate in position. The battery is located behind this plate.

What kind of battery (battery number?) Will I loose settings? Is this different than the clock battery on top?
Yes, it is different than the battery on top. This battery is in the rear of the unit. Behind the 6 screws which I mentioned above. The battery information is - 7.4V 2200mAh Li-Ion. P/N: EPG-1337. However, we do sell the batteries. You can call and have one shipped to you. It is always recommended, when replacing any batteries, to backup the system on an SD card. You shouldn't lose any settings during this replacement, but I would backup the system prior to the job. If you need any more information, or to order one, please call our office. Thanks.

I assume this would be the same process and part for the 3400 non-s?
Yes,
The same backup battery is used in both the S and non-S units.
