Pilot:Pete Hicks
Aircraft: RV-7
Comments: Here a a few pictures of recently completed RV7.

Panel has dual  AF3500 (EFIS and EM) with Garmin avionics (gns430 Nav/com,  SL40 backup radio, GTX327 Transponder and 327 Intercom).  Trutrak IIVSGV autopilot, and ADI.  Aircraft flown from right hand seat.

The fuctionality of the Advanced EFIS and Autopilot and GNS430 is great.

Comments:I live in Norway and bought the 3500 back in 2006 for my RV-7, which had the first flight in July 2009.
The 3500 has been performing REALLY well and the customer support is SUPERB! Therefore, there's no doubt that I'll buy an EFIS from you for my second RV-7 which is almost ready for engine and instruments.

I really like the layout, the intuitive menus and the easy operation of the 3500. Installation was easy and the install-instructions very good.
It's also comforting to know that there's updated software with regular intervals, the forum contains a ton of nice info and there's ALOT of options with each product.

I've built the cockpit so the R/H seat is pilot seat, but the 3500 is easy to see from both seats.

Keep up the good work!

Pilot: Joe Friend
Aircraft: RV-9
Comments: First flight was 5/28/09.  I am using your AF-3500 and ARINC module.  The major components in the panel include a GNS 430W, GPSMAP 496 with XM, a Trio EZ Pilot 2-axis autopilot, GTX 327 transponder and an Icom IC-A200 comm radio. The choice of avionics was made almost 3 years ago.

The EFIS is driven by the 430. My intention was to have it also capable of being driven by the 496 without reprogramming but a wire to the EFIS was not seen to be required when the Approach Fast Stack cabling was produced.

The Trio autopilot can be driven by either the 430W or the 496 using a simple switch. A feature of the autopilot which I greatly appreciate is the ability to use the altitude hold without having roll control engaged.  It does not, however, yet have the ability to track vertical guidance on an ILS or LPV approach.

Electrical power is provided by a 60 A. alternator, a 13 AH primary battery, an 8 AH auxiliary battery, networked through an 80 A. bridge, and internal batteries in the AF-3500 and the 496.  The 3500 monitors the alternator voltage and current and separate switched ammeter and voltmeter monitor the main and aux. batteries. All batteries are rechargable from the alternator.  The 3500 EMS functions and the data logging have been very useful to me.

I am very pleased with my choice of components. I have remarkable functionality, navigation alternatives and redundancy.

Comments: Attached is a picture of my RV-6A dual AF-3400 installation.
It is a basic VFR setup. You will notice there is no "Red" knob. My aircraft is powered by a Mattituck IOF-360 with Aerosance FADEC. Engine operation is basically no different than an automobile. Power up and power down are literally done by the turn of a key. The FADEC system maintains optimal engine operation under all power settings.

I mention the FADEC system only because when I first asked Rob Hickman at Sun 'n Fun 2006 if his systems would support FADEC, he said they would. I ordered my systems on the spot. Rob and his staff came through with flying colors. I'm not sure how many FADEC customers he had at the time, but Rob is definitely a man of his word and has developed a truly remarkable system. During my initial engine ground runs I experienced a cylinder miss fire. The beauty of the EMS is, I was able to download my engine data, plot all my EGT's and CHT's and send the data off to Mattituck for evaluation. Turned out to be some fuel contamination in one my injectors. Having this information made the diagnosis of the problem extremely easy. I am pleased with my investment, and look forward to long and reliable service. Thanks to all the folks at Advanced Flight Systems.

Comments: Attached is a picture of my RV-7 dual AF-3500 installation.  The installation, power up, IFR certification, and now daily operation of the 3500s have been flawless.  The quality of the product and the support from your staff has been exceptional.  I now have approximately 75 hours on the aircraft without a single malfunction or concern with the panel. During the initial flight hours I did experience several engine related problems consisting of partially plugged injectors, porous intake manifold, and defective battery.  These were easily diagnosed by downloading the engine/flight data from the 3500. It’s a great troubleshooting tool. In addition, the crosstalk feature between the two systems makes flying approaches with a copilot fun while at the same time providing the redundancy necessary for comfortable IFR flight. Having flown for the Navy for 30+ years I can honestly say that I am more comfortable with the way your systems present information than anything I have flown in the past.  The transition from “steam gauges” to EFIS was a snap. Thanks to the AFS Team for providing such a quality product. (You may remember me; I scrapped a completely installed BMA dual EFIS panel to switch to yours about a year ago.  I couldn’t be happier)

Aircraft: Glasair III
Comments: As a former Corporate Jet Pilot I have been exposed to some amazing panels and expect results from the equipment I fly. The Glasair III before you is used for our business with the mission to get home for dinner every night. With a 220 knot TAS I haven't been late yet and thanks to AFS I can do it safely. The EFIS and EM function flawlessly and teach me something new with each flight. The amount of information these units put out to a pilot is truly unbelievable and the learning curve is short due to the user friendly thinking at AFS. Setup with any new unit can be daunting, but with the excellent customer support from AFS the problems were solved with just a phone call and me sitting in the plane as they talked me through. If you are looking for an affordable glass cockpit I highly recommend AFS. It is just the biggest bang for the buck. Oh by the way our Glasair III is air conditioned. Come visit our web site and take a look at the air conditioning units we sell for experimental aircraft at www.starliteat.com.

Aircraft: RV-4
Comments: I rebuilt my -4s panel and installed an AFS-3500, Trutrak Digiflight IIVS, a Garmin SL-30 Nav/com/gs, and a Garmin GPSMAP-496. I have to say that I am very satisfied with AFS, and especially Rob Hickman. Their customer service has been better than any other company I have ever dealt with on problems that were self inflicted.
AFS updated the software to version 5 at Oshkosh 2007, and it has performed flawlessly. Upgrading to new software is an easy process, since all you have to do is plug an SD card into the front of the unit. I really like the split screen map and EFIS for the cross country portions of my flight. I go the full screen EFIS for landing.
The feature that I use the most was a surprise to me. It is the AOA system. I would not fly an RV without it again. I find that I don't even look at airspeed much on approach anymore, except as a rough cross check. Additionally, the change from a heavy to a light airplane stall speed is at least 5 knots.  I didn't realize this before getting the AFS-3500.  My wife and I flew to KOSH this year, and had to make a tight turn for landing. I had just refueled, and with a passenger and bags, we were heavy. During the turn we got much closer to stall than I would have ever thought prior to having the AOA.  I reacted by adding power and reducing the bank angle.  I don't know if I would have stalled without the AOA, but it would have been close just based on airspeed.
In general, the unit is very readable, even in direct sunlight. The scrolling numbers are a really nice addition, as well as the new altitide saw tooth display.  I also like the verbal alarms for things like fuel and oil pressure.  It is like having a copilot who only talks when you want her to.
Thank you Rob.

Comments: Great unit -- it replaces so many instruments and lets me save valuable panel space. The screen is bright and logically laid out, and I really like the data acquisition feature which allows you to troubleshoot problems and analyze flights, it's extremely valuable. The customizability lets you have both screen parameters and voice warnings exactly the way you want them. Great support from the AFS staff also!

Comments: The Advanced 2002 engine monitor is a masterpiece of engineering from Rob, and his customer service is the best in the business. No one but Rob will give out their cell phone # for asistance with install or calabration asistance 7 days a week. He is # 1 in my book and I would recomend his unit to anyone.

Pilot:  Don Karich

Comments: I'm more than happy to share positive feedback regarding my AFS2000 engine monitor. It is dialed in and working perfectly (not without some minor glitches) thanks to the superb installation by Advantage Avionics (Mark Kreuger and his exellent technicians) and thorough factory support which was quickly forthcoming and generously given. I would not hesitate to recommend this fine team. I find the monitor easy to use, understand, and read . I was very well thought out and works as advertized.

Pilot:  Jack Fromm

Comments: I have one of the earliest units and initially had some data corruption issues and a couple of sensors go bad. New sensors were in the mail the same day I called and the data issues were resolved by downloading the latest software release. Unit has performed flawlessly since (75 hours). I think the display has the most intuitive layout of any monitor on the market. I love it.

Pilot:  Mike Stewart
Aircraft: RV Super 8
Comments: This is by far the most modern engine monitor in the business. This little gem is the cats meow in terms of price and function. Easy to use, the AF-2500 is full of features which I use every minute of every flight. With the crowded and limited panel space of my tandem RV-8, the built in added features of trim & fuel quality make this worth its weight in gold just in the panel space alone. Can you believe the fuel quality changes to reflect whether my tail is down or up in my tail dragger? I mean how cool is that? Everything has worked from day one and I have nothing but great things to say about the company and the product. I do a lot of flight testing for experimental product manufacturers and let me tell you, these guys are on the ball and will own this market space. Recently I completed an injector flow balance using the AF-2500, see here for details. Keep up the good work AFS!

AOA
Pilot: Mike Robbins, Sammamish, WA
Aircraft: RV-8
Comments: I have the Sport AOA and find it a good supplement to the airspeed indicator, although not a replacement. I find it difficult to hold the ideal two amber light condition on approach, so I still use the airspeed as my primary reference, with the AOA as a backup. I do credit it with possibly saving my bacon once when I had only a few hours on the plane and did a pull-up at pattern altitude. I suddenly noticed all the red LEDs illuminate, and quickly unloaded, avoiding a low altitude stall. So with that incident alone I felt it was money well spent. It is also quite useful when doing aerobatics as it alerts you to approach to stalls when pulling 'g's where the airspeed indicator is useless.

Pilot: John Huft, Colorado
Aircraft: RV-8
Comments: I like the location since it is easy to take in when landing, and also in my peripheral vision, so it acts like a stall warning, when I see red, I release back pressure. I'm pleased to see Rob taking over on the product, it is well worth supporting.
