Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broad/cast (ADS-B)

Most of the information on this page comes directly from the FAA as of Aug 2016.

Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast (ADS-B) is a precise satellite-based surveillance system. ADS-B Out uses GPS technology to determine an aircraft's location, airspeed and other data, and broadcasts that information to a network of ground stations, which relays the data to air traffic control displays and to nearby aircraft equipped to receive the data via ADS-B In. Operators of aircraft equipped with ADS-B In can receive weather and traffic position information delivered directly to the cockpit.

ADS-B Out

ADS-B Out works by transmitting information about an aircraft's location, ground speed and other data to satellites once per second. This information is simultaneously beamed back down to a network of ground stations. Air traffic controllers and aircraft equipped with ADS-B In can immediately receive this information. This offers more precise tracking of aircraft compared to radar technology, which sweeps for position information every 5 to 12 seconds.

Aircraft operating in most controlled U.S. airspace must be equipped with ADS-B Out by January 1, 2020.

Currently only the AF-5000 has the capability of directly controlling the Dynon SV-XPNDR-26X ADS-B Out transponder. All other aircraft will need to be equipped with standalone transponder solutions like the options listed below.

ADS-B In

ADS-B In provides operators of properly equipped aircraft with weather and traffic position information delivered directly to the cockpit. ADS-B In-equipped aircraft have access to the graphical weather displays in the cockpit as well as text-based advisories, including Notices to Airmen and significant weather activity.

AF-3000s / AF-4000s / AF-5000 Series displays can draw active weather and traffic on the top down map. The AF-5000 has the additional feature of drawing synthetic targets within the EFIS view.
