Thread: 3400 and 4500 for IFR upgrade

3400 and 4500 for IFR upgrade

I am planning a glass upgrade to my instrument panel (for IFR) and would like to clear up some issues that appear to be a little confusing... I am thinking about installing 1- 4500 and 1-3400. The 4500 will be my main EFIS and mapping display (4500 EF). The 3400 (EE) will be my MFD display including engine, weather/mapping, IFR charts, and a backup EFIS.

    1. In comparison to the 4500, does the 3400 (the current version) have enough memory and processing power to support; weather, mapping, IFR approach plates, and synthetic vision. What are the 3400’s current limitations with respect to the 4500, and what are the expected limitations with respect to future software application upgrades (IFR Charts or VFR charts etc...)?
    2. Do I understand that each unit (4500 (EF) & 3400(EE) as configured) has its own AHRS built into the units so that I will have AHRS redundancy?
    3. Can the 2 remote magnetometers be installed close to each other in the aircraft, what are the restrictions with respect to installing 2 magnetometers?
    4. Can the EF + EE configuration display and share ALL information using an Ethernet hub? What are the sharing/display limitations of a 4500 + 3400 configuration?
    5. Advanced Flight documentation talks about GPS IFR support for the 430/530 systems... My configuration will have one 420W (Same as the 430 but no VOR), does this unit meet the same supported IFR parameters as the 430/530 systems.
    6. If my planned system as described above is configured for IFR with 2 AHRS, 2 magnetometers, 2 Alternators, one AF GPS Module, one battery backup for EACH unit, one autopilot and appropriate radios, what traditional (non-glass) instruments does Advanced Flight suggest should be included on my panel for an IFR configuration?

    Thank you... Victor

    Victor, all good questions.
    1) The 4500s/3500s/3400s all use the same processor and memory. So they will each be able to support weather, mapping, synthetic vision, and approach plates.
    2) If you get an EF or an EE it will have an internal AHRS module. The EM and MFD do not.
3)They can me mounted right next to each other
    4) Yes, they will both be tied via ethernet and if a hub is used, display weather on the maps. There are no limitations between the 3400/4500 combo
    5) With our ARINC adapter, you can connect your GNS-420W to the EFIS screens and they will share the course and flight plan information
    6) You pretty much listed it all! That is a great configuration!

    Trevor,

The documentation is a little fuzzy on these issues... Thank you for the information. Victor

Victor, take a look at the panel in my RV-8. The panel has the equipment that you want to use in your installation. Each AFS box can function independently of one another as an EFIS, and they share information with an ethernet cable. Everything in the panel 'talks' to each other. The airplane will fly a coupled ILS like it is on rails....same for a coupled GPS approach. I am VERY pleased with this installation. It has gobs of redundancy, and is a joy to fly behind.

    Jim,

Thank you for the info... Your panel looks very much like what I had in mind except for the 696. Why have you installed a 696 in the panel? My plan was to use the TWO Advance Flight displays for everything, EFIS, Engine, Weather, Mapping, Charts, etc.

    Good looking installation... Victor

    Hi Victor

The 696 is in the panel for a number if reasons. I am using it as a secondary GPS for navigation. I also use it for XM weather (it is EXCELLENT for XM weather) and it passes frequencies through to the SL30, which is a pretty handy feature. It will display 430 flight plans, or with the flip of a switch you can disable that feature. It also has an internal battery, plus a GPS derived 6 pack, both of which would allow me to navigate and keep the airplane right side up if everything else failed. I like redundancy, and the 696 provides just that.
