    4500 vs. 3500 features

I'm building a RV7 slider. My intent was to install 2 4500's along the with the Vertical Power 200 and radio stack in the panel. After looking everything over, the 4500's are quite large.

I would like to know if I can get ALL of the same 4500 features in the smaller 3500 6.5" screens?

I thought I read that you could, but can't find it.

Hello Darwin. You can get ALMOST all of the same features in the 3500 compared to the 4500. The only difference is that you have two knobs on the 4500, the right one being a joystick. Keep in mind if you can fit 2 AF-3500's in your panel, then you can fit 2 AF-4500p's in your panel. The AF-4500p is the panel mount version which has the same bezel as the AF-3500 which mounts from the rear. It requires a smaller panel cutout and is excellent for those who already have an AF-3500 and want to upgrade without having to cut their panel. You mention 6.4" screen, that would be the smallest model we make, the AF-3400. You can definitely fit AF-4500p's or the AF-3500's in your panel.

    Hi Darwin,

In case it helps, here's a pic of my RV-7 (tip-up) panel under construction showing my layout for two AF3500's and a G695 in AirGizmo mount which is 6.25" wide. Here in the UK we are required to have backup ASI and Altimeter. Taking those out and shifting everything to the left I would think you'd get the VP200 DU (6.25" x 5.5") in on the right hand side if you went for a pair of 4500p's.

My panel is slightly deeper than standard (+ 1.5"), which gives me the space for my 2.25" round instruments/radios beneath the AF3500's.

    Hope that helps.

p.s. I know the mixture and prop controls are swapped. That was unintentional. I just trial fitted them (wrongly) when taking the photo.

    Thanks Trevor,

I guess I'll go ahead with the 4500's I've got the trays already and have laid out the panel. Looks good.

On a second note, when will more weather detail be available on the EFIS from XM. I think winds are an important feature that should be included.

    Darwin,
Go to Steinair and click on custom panels. Scroll down to the rv6,7,9 area and look at the third panel down on the left, It has two 4500's a radio stack and a trutrak efis. It is owned by Alex d in Texas.

DONVS - did you have to notch or modify any of the panel supports to make that panel layout work?

    Thanks,

    Scott,
Yes . All three ribs needed to be trimmed. The panel is based on the three piece affordable panel so I also had to cut the mount to move the radio stack to the left. Lots of work but it is worth it.
